The newly rehabilitated MV Umoja, Kazi Iendelee, a cargo vessel plying the Mwanza – Portbell – Jinja route was launched 17th November, 2023 after undergoing major rehabilitation at a cost of 8,422,840 US dollars, equivalent to 21bn/- Tsh.
The inauguration of MV Umoja that took place in Mwanza, Tanzania went in line with the signing of three contracts for rehabilitation of MV Liemba, a passenger and cargo ferry plying in Lake Tanganyika and rehabilitation projects for MT Nyangumi for carrying petroleum products and MT Ukerewe, a rescue vessel both operating in Lake Victoria.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister for Transport, Hon. David Kihenzile representing the docket minister Hon. Prof Makame Mbarawa said the ship will be an important cargo transportation link between the Central railway and neighbouring railways of Uganda and Kenya.
Hon. Kihenzile noted that cargo transportation through the vessel will increase efficiency in the transport sector by transporting large cargo volume at once and at affordable charges compared to land transport. He informed that the resumption of MV Umoja in transport services is expected to stimulate trade between the East African countries.
The re- launch of MV. Umoja onto Lake Victoria transport routes provides opportunities for Uganda’s exporters and importers to boost the utilization of the Central Corridor.
